An Interview with Jennifer Thomson, author of Bullying A Parent’s Guide Available on Amazon. Recommended RP £9.99.

Why did you write this book?
As someone who was bullied at school, I know the misery it can cause. I wanted to write a book that would not only give parents advice on how to get the bullying to stop, but also give them an insight into how it feels to be bullied.

How do you think it will help parents?
In 3 ways -
1- It will give them the knowledge they need to approach the school about the bullying to get it to stop.
2- It will help them to understand what their child is going through.
3- It will give tips on how they can boost their child’s shattered self-esteem.

How does this book differ from other bullying books?
Few guides offers ways that you can boost your child’s self-esteem and help parents to understand the effect bullying has on a child’s psyche.

What would your advice be to parents who find out their child is being bullied?
First of all they shouldn't blame their child for what's happening, however indirectly. Some parents do and may say things like 'didn't we teach you to stand up for yourself' or 'why didn't you tell us what was going on?'

This may make their child think they are the ones who've done something wrong and not the bully.

Secondly, parents need to reassure their child that they will do everything in their power to stop the bullying, but should only say they will take them out of school if they genuinely mean it.

Thirdly, they should look at ways of repairing the damage done to their child's self-esteem. This is vital as bullying can leave its mark even years after it's ended. There are practical tips on how to build your child's confidence in Bullying A Parent’s Guide.

What would your advice be to any child who's been bullied?
Tell someone. This can be someone you trust, but there are also charities with people you can speak to in complete confidence who will listen to you.

The bully or bullies lose their power when you tell someone. I would also tell them that the bullying will end.
